If you’re looking for a fun and creative date night idea in Charlotte, let me introduce you to our new favorite: a pottery class at Clayworks! My husband and I recently spent an evening there, and it was such a memorable and refreshing way to connect, laugh, and try something totally new together.

Why Pottery?

We love finding experiences that break up our usual routine. Going out to dinner is always nice, but we were in the mood for something more interactive—and Clayworks absolutely delivered. The idea of working with our hands, getting a little messy, and walking away with something we made ourselves sounded like the perfect mix of challenge and fun. Plus I always loved working with the pottery wheel in art class in high school.

Our Class at Clayworks:

We took one of Clayworks’ beginner classes, and it was so much fun. The studio is welcoming and cozy, with shelves lined with ceramic pieces that immediately made us excited for what we could hopefully create.

Our instructor, Carl, was absolutely incredible. He was patient, encouraging, and super helpful throughout the whole process. Even though most of us in the class were complete beginners, Carl made sure we understood each step and didn’t make us feel silly for asking questions (or for accidentally flinging a bit of clay here and there!).

Hands-On from the Start

This wasn’t just a watch-and-learn kind of class. From the very beginning, we were hands-on—wedging clay, centering it on the wheel, and learning how to shape it into a bowl with varying levels of success! My husband and I couldn’t stop laughing at some of our wonky creations, but that was part of the charm. It was such a low-pressure environment that we felt totally comfortable just going with the flow and enjoying the experience.

Perfect for Date Night:

There’s something really special about doing something creative together. We weren’t on our phones, we weren’t distracted by the usual daily stuff—we were just focused on the clay and on each other. It was a little messy, a lot of fun, and surprisingly relaxing.

On the drive home, we talked about how much fun we had. Now we’re anxiously waiting to pick up our finished pieces once they’re fired and glazed! This can take 3-4 weeks.
