You know how people say “don’t play with fire”? Well, apparently that advice goes out the window when you sign up for a glassblowing class. My husband and I recently took a workshop at Hot Glass Alley in Charlotte, and let me tell you—it was the hottest date night we’ve ever had. Literally.

My husband and I have been trying to mix things up with more creative outings, and this one absolutely delivered. Tucked away in a nondescript building off North Davidson Street, Hot Glass Alley is a working glassblowing studio that offers classes and workshops for all skill levels. The moment you walk in, you’re greeted by the glow of the furnaces and an atmosphere full of creativity and craftsmanship.

What to Expect:
We signed up for a “Make Your Own” class, which gives you the chance to create your own glass piece—think paperweights, ornaments, or small vases. Don’t worry if you’ve never touched a blowpipe before (we hadn’t!). The team there is incredibly knowledgeable and patient, walking you through every step of the process while keeping things safe and fun.
Watching molten glass spin and transform under your own hands is nothing short of mesmerizing. There’s a very real sense of awe when you see your breath literally shape the glass—and it’s surprisingly meditative, too. We both made glasses—wine glass for me, bourbon glass for the hubs.

Why We Loved It and You Will Too (Even if You’re Not Crafty):
- Hands-on experience: You’re not just watching—you’re doing.
- Friendly, expert instructors: They make you feel confident, even if you’re a total beginner. Our Gaffer Greg was very knowledgeable.
- One-of-a-kind souvenirs: We each made a handmade glass piece that we’ll cherish way more than anything store-bought.
- A great bonding moment: Working together, cheering each other on, and laughing at our beginner mistakes made this such a memorable experience.

Tips for Fellow Fire Tamers:
- Wear closed-toe shoes. Trust me, your toes don’t want to meet hot or broken glass.
- Leave your fluffy sweater at home. It’s basically a furnace in there.
- Be prepared to pick up your masterpiece a few days later (they cool it slowly so it doesn’t explode—always a good thing).
- Book ahead—classes fill up quickly, especially on weekends.

If you’re in Charlotte and want to impress your significant other, learn something new, and emerge with a slightly misshapen glass object and a great story, Hot Glass Alley is your spot. We laughed the entire time, made something kind of beautiful, and no one got third-degree burns. 10/10 date night.

Would you try glassblowing, or are you more of a “watch from a safe distance with snacks” kind of person? Have you been to Hot Glass Alley? I’d love to hear about your experience—or answer any questions if you’re thinking of signing up!
